About Cockroach Control

Why cockroaches need professional control

Cockroaches live where it is warm, damp and dark with food close by: behind fridges and dishwashers, under sinks, around boilers and pipework, in drains and bin stores. A sighting when the lights go on, droppings like coffee grounds or an egg case behind an appliance usually means the population is established.

Two species account for almost all problems here. The German cockroach is small, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, and breeds in warm kitchens. The Oriental cockroach is larger and almost black and prefers cool damp drains, cellars and bin stores. We treat with gel baits and targeted insecticides, set monitors and follow up until catches stop.

They carry bacteria from drains to food

Cockroaches move between sewers, bins and worktops, spreading bacteria such as salmonella, and their droppings and shed skins trigger asthma.

Egg cases hatch after sprays

A female German cockroach carries her egg case, dozens of nymphs inside, out of reach of surface sprays.

Aerosols scatter them

Household sprays and foggers drive cockroaches deeper into voids and neighbouring flats, and contaminate the surfaces where bait would have worked.

Shared buildings share cockroaches

In flats and converted buildings cockroaches move through service ducts and along pipework, so one treated kitchen is reinfested from next door.

Food businesses face inspection

A cockroach sighting can close a kitchen, and environmental health officers expect a pest control programme with monitoring and records.

Signs of cockroaches

Sightings at night

Cockroaches running for cover when a light goes on, especially around the cooker, fridge, sink and boiler.

Droppings

Specks like ground coffee from German cockroaches, larger cylindrical droppings from Oriental, in cupboards and behind appliances.

Egg cases

Brown purse-shaped cases about the length of a grain of rice, whole or empty, in cracks, hinges and behind appliances.

Smear marks

Brown smears along walls, skirting and shelf edges where cockroaches run in damp conditions.

A musty, oily smell

A stale smell in cupboards, under the sink or behind the fridge where numbers are high.

What we do on a cockroach treatment visit

Step 1

Identify the species and map the activity

We inspect the kitchen, bathroom, boiler area, drains and voids, place sticky monitors and work out whether the species is German or Oriental and where the harbourages are.

Step 2

Bait and treat the harbourages

We place gel bait in the cracks and warm voids cockroaches use and carry back to others, and apply residual insecticide or dust to voids and drains where bait alone is not enough.

Step 3

Advise on hygiene and proofing

We show you the leaks, gaps around pipes, open drains, cardboard and food residues that support the population, and agree who does what before the next visit.

Step 4

Monitor and follow up

Monitors tell us whether nymphs are still hatching. We return to check them and re-bait as needed, and give businesses written records of each visit.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the floor and the space under the sink and around appliances so we can reach behind and beneath them.
  • Clean up food residues and grease, empty the bins and seal food away so bait is the most attractive food available.
  • Do not use aerosols, foggers or cleaning sprays where we are going to treat; they repel cockroaches from bait.
  • Note where and when you have seen cockroaches, droppings or egg cases, and whether neighbours have had problems.

Keeping cockroaches from coming back

  • Fix drips and leaks under sinks, around toilets and behind appliances; cockroaches need water more than food.
  • Seal gaps around pipes, cables and ducts through walls and floors, and fit covers to gullies and floor drains.
  • Keep worktops, floors and the areas behind and under appliances free of grease and crumbs, and empty bins daily.
  • Remove cardboard boxes promptly; cockroaches travel in deliveries and breed in corrugated card.
  • Keep monitors in place after treatment and check them weekly; a catch is the time to call.

What affects the price

  • The species and how far the infestation has spread through the building.
  • The size and layout of the premises and how many kitchens, voids and drains need treating.
  • Whether the job is one treatment programme or an ongoing contract with monitoring and records.
  • Access and preparation, including whether units and appliances can be reached.

Common questions about cockroach control

Why should cockroaches be dealt with early?
Cockroaches can spread quickly in warm, sheltered areas and are a serious hygiene concern for homes and food premises.
Do commercial premises need monitoring?
Often, yes. Food premises and shared sites may need treatment, monitoring, hygiene actions, and prevention advice.
German cockroach or Oriental cockroach, does it matter?
Yes. German cockroaches are small, light brown and live in warm kitchens, breeding faster than any species we deal with. Oriental cockroaches are large, dark and prefer cool damp drains. The species decides where we treat and which baits we use.
Can I spray cockroaches myself?
Sprays kill the cockroaches you see, scatter the rest into voids and neighbouring rooms, and repel cockroaches from bait. If you have already sprayed, tell us so we can place bait where it will still be eaten.
Will I still see cockroaches after treatment?
For a while, yes. Bait works as cockroaches feed and carry it back, so sightings tail off rather than stop overnight, and nymphs hatch from egg cases for a few weeks. Our monitors show whether numbers are falling.
Will cockroaches come back after treatment?
They can if the conditions that supported them stay the same or the building around you is infested. Sealing gaps, fixing leaks and keeping monitors in place catch a return early; in shared buildings we advise treating adjoining units together.
