About Ant Control

Why ants need professional control

The ants marching across your kitchen in summer are almost always black garden ants, foraging from a nest under the patio, in the lawn or beneath a solid floor. They follow scent trails to anything sweet or greasy, and spraying the trail is ant removal for an afternoon: a few dozen workers out of thousands.

Flying ants in July and August are the same species on their mating flights; a swarm from a floor, wall or air brick means a mature nest in or under the building. Pharaoh ants, tiny yellow-brown ants that live in heated buildings all year, split into new colonies when sprayed. We identify the ant, follow the trails to the nest and bait or treat the colony.

The nest is the problem, not the trail

The workers you see are a fraction of the colony; unless the queen and brood are reached, more follow the same route.

Scent trails are persistent

Ants lay a pheromone trail from nest to food that water does not remove, so workers find the route again.

Nests under floors and in walls

Black garden ants nest under paving, lawns, foundations and solid floors, with entrances you cannot see from indoors.

Sprays make Pharaoh ants worse

Pharaoh ant colonies have many queens and split when sprayed; only slow-acting bait carried back to the brood controls them.

Flying ants mean a mature colony

Winged ants indoors in summer come from a nest in or beneath the building; dealing with the swarm does nothing about the nest.

Signs of an ant problem

Trails of ants

Lines of small black ants along skirting, worktops, window frames and door thresholds to a food source.

Ants around sweet food

Ants in sugar, honey, jam, fruit bowls, pet bowls and the bin, and around spills under appliances.

Fine soil or sand indoors

Small heaps of soil, sand or mortar dust pushed up between floorboards or paving slabs.

Flying ants in summer

Swarms of winged ants emerging from floors, walls, air bricks or paving on warm humid days in July and August.

Tiny yellow ants all year

Very small pale yellow-brown ants in bathrooms, kitchens and around heaters in winter point to Pharaoh ants.

What we do on an ant control visit

Step 1

Identify the ant and follow the trails

We confirm the species, then follow the trails from the food back to the entry points and, where possible, the nest.

Step 2

Bait or treat the colony

For black garden ants we treat the nest where we find it and apply residual insecticide to outside entry points. For Pharaoh ants and unreachable nests we use gel bait that workers carry back to the queens.

Step 3

Deal with the entry points

We point out the gaps around doors, windows, pipes and paving the ants use, advise on sealing them, and treat around them where useful.

Step 4

Explain the next weeks

Bait needs ants to keep feeding, so we explain why to leave it undisturbed and not spray or clean around it, and follow up if activity continues.

Before we arrive

  • Note where the ants come in and where they go, and where any flying ants emerged.
  • Clean up spills, cover sweet and greasy food and empty the bin, so bait is the best food on offer.
  • Do not spray the trails before we arrive; scattered trails make the nest harder to find and bait less effective.
  • Clear access to the skirting, under the sink and the areas where ants enter, and to the patio or wall outside.

Keeping ants out of the house

  • Keep sugar, honey, pet food and fruit in sealed containers, and wipe up spills straight away.
  • Seal cracks around door and window frames, air bricks and pipe entries, and repoint loose mortar at ground level.
  • Rinse recycling and keep bins closed and away from the back door.
  • Keep plants and climbers off the walls; they are bridges for ants into gaps around windows.
  • Deal with aphids on plants near the house; black garden ants farm them for honeydew and the colony grows on it.

What affects the price

  • The species, since Pharaoh ant baiting programmes run longer than a garden ant treatment.
  • How many rooms, entry points and nests are involved.
  • The size of the property and the garden or yard around it.
  • Whether the job is a one-off treatment or part of a contract for a business.

Common questions about ant control

Why do ants keep returning?
Ants follow trails to food, water, and nesting areas. Control is stronger when the route and attraction are understood.
Can ant problems affect businesses?
Yes. Ant activity can affect kitchens, retail spaces, food storage, offices, and customer-facing areas.
Are flying ants a different species?
No. Here they are usually black garden ants: new queens and males leaving mature nests on mating flights in July and August. The swarm is over in a day or two; the nest is not.
Do ants damage the house?
Black garden ants do not eat timber or wiring; they loosen mortar and sand under paving and contaminate food. Pharaoh ants are a hygiene problem. Carpenter ants that damage wood are not established in Britain.
Why should I not spray the ants myself?
Spraying kills the workers and leaves the queen and brood untouched, so the colony re-routes, and with Pharaoh ants it splits into new nests. Baits work because the ants carry them home.
When are ants worst?
From late spring to early autumn, worst in warm dry spells and on flying ant days. Pharaoh ants in heated buildings are active all year.
